Partners

Maine Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) have entered into a true medical education partnership, one in which both parties contribute to a unique outcome that neither could achieve on its own. This historic agreement ushers in a new model of medical education.

As an affiliate hospital serving as a clinical site for undergraduate training, Maine Medical Center's past influence on educational outcomes was limited to the quality of clinical training. Today, with the establishment of MMC.TUSM, we can have significant, and potentially national, impact on the field of medicine.

From its extensive experience wtih branch campuses to its clinical leadership model that includes faculty, Tufts School of Medicine is the ideal partner for this innovative program venture. It brings strong, capable, and engaging School of Medicine leadership to the table along with a willingness to fully share governance through:

  • a joint steering and operations committee
  • a TUSM academic dean staffed by and located at MMC
  • a 10-year (renewable) term for partnership
  • a mutual agreement on program goals and policies, and
  • a completely collaborative process of student recruitment and selection and curriculum development

Partnership between the two institutions will extend beyond medical education, as opportunities for collaboration include signature clinical programs and research. Tufts has active research programs in genomics, clinical research/evidence based medicine, regenerative medicine, drugs, and bilogics, which match our focus at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute.
